Celebrating Our 2024 Touchstones Teacher of the Year
Anaka Osborne
Washington Latin Public Charter School
Washington DC
Each year we honor a teacher who embodies the principles of Touchstones in honor of Geoffrey J. Comber who was one of Touchstones’ co-founders and a passionate believer in public education. The benchmarks for recognition that the nominees must exhibit are a commitment to empower all people with communication, thinking, and leadership skills that prepare them for success in work, school and life.
We are excited to announce that our Geoffrey J. Comber Touchstones Teacher of the Year is Anaka Osborne, the Director of Literacy at Washington Latin Public Charter School’s Cooper Campus and a sixth-grade Touchstones teacher.
In nominating her for this recognition, Bill Clausen, the school’s Assistant Principal, wrote, “Anaka has been a champion of our work with Touchstones…She creates a wonderful environment and brings out the best in each student. At the end of each lesson, she is able to celebrate her successes while also thinking through things she can do next time…It is her support of Touchstones and her belief in the accompanying skills of listening and teamwork that has led Touchstones’ continued inclusion in the lives of all 380 of our middle school students each week.” Congratulations, Anaka!
Teacher of the Year Award
Since 2011, Touchstones has honored an educator in the U.S. or Canada for their work in the classroom. Thanks to Cynthia M. Barry, who first sponsored this award and who is herself a long-time Touchstones teacher, each year, we are able to recognize teacher leadership in schools located in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. This award was renamed for Geoffrey J. Comber in 2020, in honor of Touchstones’ co-founder and unfailing champion of teachers, who passed away in late 2019.
Educators may nominate themselves or be nominated by a colleague or supervisor for this award. Nominations are accepted in the summer and announced in the early fall. The winner of the award receives a cash prize of $250 and is honored at an awards ceremony. If you have questions about this award, please reach out to us at schoolprograms@touchstones.org.
