About Elliott Zuckerman

Dr. Zuckerman was a Tutor Emeritus at St John’s College in Annapolis, where he began teaching in 1961. Before that, he taught at Columbia University and at the New School.

Born in Brooklyn in 1930, his study of painting began at the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where, while continuing to study music elsewhere, he matriculated as an art student. He continued painting while at Cambridge and participated in a series of exhibits while he was a student there. After returning to the U.S. from Europe, he didn’t paint for many years. In the mid nineteen-seventies, Elliott started painting again, first with portraiture, which he had never tried previously. In 1980, he had a show of 30 portraits and self-portraits in Annapolis, Maryland. By then, Elliott was also painting still-lifes and landscapes and was exhibiting regularly at the Maryland Federation of Art. In 2010, his one-artist show at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts received high praise.

His paintings are in numerous private collections in Maryland, Chicago, New York, Boston, Virginia, and throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

When he passed away in 2019, Dr. Zuckerman bequeathed a collection of 180+ of his original paintings to Touchstones Discussion Project in celebration of his long-time friend and colleague, Howard Zeiderman and in support of the Touchstones mission to build community through inclusive discussion everywhere.
