Touchstones in Haitian Community Schools
“I get continual feedback from our Supervisor and the facilitator that Touchstones is really having a huge impact on the kids – that they have come to work together very much as a team, the stronger ones supporting the others to improve.”
In the 1990s, when a former Touchstones employee traveled to Haiti, his journey firmly planted Touchstones as a fruitful tool for literacy development with adults and children. Known in Haiti as “Wonn Refleksyon” or “Circles of Reflection” (because there is no translation into Kreyol for the word “touchstones”), Touchstones first partnered with Fondasyon Limye Lavi to bring Touchstones school programs into conventional primary schools, adult literacy and workforce readiness programs, and community-based initiatives. From there, additional organizations including Limyè Lavi, Fondasyon Eksperyansla, and KOFAVIV gained access to Touchstones.
Today, Haiti Partners is using Touchstones programs to build teacher and support staff capacity in its own school as well as making Wonn Refleksyon volumes available to a range of organizations working with the underserved. Touchstones volumes are regularly used in their partner schools with approximately 700 students and in educator training programs. In addition, Children’s Place, International uses Touchstones Volume A in Kreyol in their three-year New Ventures program for children and families afflicted with life-altering illness.
